Common Questions

Is this like Counselling, CBT, or EMDR?

I draw on a broad range of approaches, including ideas from CBT and memory reconsolidation based methods such as EMDR.

The main difference is that rather than repeatedly analysing thoughts, we work with the emotional learning that gives those thoughts their intensity. When that learning updates, the belief often loses its grip naturally.

Do I need to talk about my past in detail?

Not usually. In many cases we can work with the emotional imprint of an experience without needing to revisit the details.

Some people prefer to keep certain events private, and that is completely fine. The focus is on updating how the nervous system has learned to respond rather than analysing the story itself.

What to Expect from Sessions

What happens in the first session?

We begin by identifying the pattern behind what you are experiencing. Often this becomes clear quite quickly.

From there we work with the emotional learning that is driving the response, allowing the nervous system to update it. When this happens, reactions that once felt automatic can begin to shift.

Throughout the process you will also learn simple methods that allow you to reinforce these changes yourself.

How long does each session last?

The main session in the Focused Reset can last up to two hours.

Follow up sessions, if needed, are usually shorter. They are used to refine the work once it meets real life situations.

How many sessions will I need?

Many people begin with the Focused Reset, which includes one extended session and the option of two follow up sessions during the following month.

Often the core shift happens during the first session, while the follow ups allow us to refine and stabilise the change if needed.

Can change really happen that quickly?

Some emotional responses can shift very quickly once the right conditions are in place.

In many sessions people notice meaningful changes within minutes. However most situations involve several layers, so we focus on identifying and updating the key patterns involved.

How do I know if this approach is right for me?

Many people who contact me have already tried other approaches or have spent a long time trying to understand their situation.

If something on the site resonates with you, there is a good chance the approach may be helpful. The aim is to identify and update the emotional patterns behind the issue, rather than simply analysing it.

If you are unsure, you are very welcome to get in touch and briefly describe what you are experiencing. I can usually let you know whether the approach is likely to be a good fit.

Results and Expectations

  • Will the results be permanent?

The aim is to update the emotional learning behind a pattern so the change holds naturally.

As with any form of personal development, new experiences can introduce fresh challenges. If that happens, the same principles can be applied again.

  • What if it doesn’t work for me?

As with any approach, results cannot be guaranteed.

The advantage of this work is that changes often become clear quickly, so you do not have to spend months wondering whether it is helping.
